I found several 100% cotton shirts at a local thrift shop. I gave them a good wash, removed the buttons and cut them up. All of these fat-quarters (and more) for $1.00 each shirt.

Perfect for Primitive projects and a way to re-purpose clothing that has fallen out of fashion or favor, I've salvaged the fabric for my quilts. I am hard pressed to find a quality (fabric) fat-quarters for a dollar anywhere. I thought about doing this after reading blogs where quilters are picking these up and some purchased the book, Scraps and Shirttails by Bonnie Hunter. Pat Speth has her Nickel Quilts, her books have some great designs as well. Be sure to check out your thrift shops where you might find some treasures of your own.
Happy Thrift Shopping, Re-purposing and Scrapping!

Those look perfect! Great idea, Kim :o)
ReplyDeleteGreat find! I need to hit my thrift stores. Did you get the Nickels quilts book yet? I love that book!
ReplyDeletethose are great fabrics! Good work friend :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Those are wonderful fabrics. And what a bargain. ~Adrienne~
ReplyDeleteOhh I love the colours you have there, and such a good way of getting an inexpensive quilt top made.
ReplyDeleteGreat collection of plaids you came home with...and that is a great way to do it!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great collection of fabrics!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I need to hit the thrift stores for some pf those shirts. A few years ago I made a rag quilt using flannel and old blue jeans I bought for 35 cents each at our local church thrift shop.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you going to do with them? Do you have a special project in mind?
ReplyDeleteWow I'm impressed, those are awesome plaids you found. I'm going to look next time I'm at the thirty store.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
Bargain! You wouldn't believe what they sell used shirts for here...£3 or more (that's like $6) not worth it!
ReplyDeleteHope you are keeping well.
So true, the price is right and those fabrics will make up nicely.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip... I'm still loving your santa. I found a white Navy wool blanket at a Army surplus this week. It will felt up wonderfully.
Christmas Blessings, Carrie
welllllll that is enough to make me go thrift shopping for shirts!!! what a haul you made on that deal! GREAT fabrics
ReplyDeleteLovely plaids - I have recently finished TWO "shirt" quilts and they are not among my very, very favorites - all of used or leftover shirt fabrics. So cozy, friendly, and one feels very frugal and clever not to have spent a great deal of $ for fabric.
ReplyDeleteThese are going to make up into something wonderful.
Great inspiration. What a way to add fabric to the stash. Cool!

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to visit the thrift store!! What a great idea.
ReplyDeletegreat find...i got a stack of linen, pink blue and natural at my thrift store...spent about 5 bucks. can't beat that!
ReplyDeleteWell ... the ex left a lot of clothing when he left. (I am really glad he is gone.) And I am going to re-purpose it into a safety blanket to carry in my truck.
ReplyDeleteI think I will do the pants in circles and the shirts in squares, combine them. I can't remember the name. Nonetheless ... it will be heavy if I need to leave it at an accident scene. Holly over at "And Sew it Is" is making this same pattern.
Basically ... a free quilt.
Best Wishes this holiday season. Cindy B. (Happy Valley, Oregon)
Very eco-friendly!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a nice collection of fabrics. A good idea to thrift shop for some cottons, especially the plaids.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great variety draped over your ironing board :) here when I go to the Goodwill searching for shirts.. it is hard to find anyhting other than blues.. but I do occasionally ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm collecting shirts too for Bonnie's book.. and with our economy the way it is.. I think I'm gonna be one step ahead when all buying anything extra has to come to a HAULT.
This summer I'm gonna be hosting a block swap using men's shirt fabrics.. block to be determined but it will be either one from Bonnie's website or book. :) maybe you'd like to join us?
Love from Texas! ~bonnie
